Being two weeks away from completing my 1st contract (6 months) with VIPKID I figured this would be a great time to review my journey with the company.
I found out about VIKID through a friend of a friend in Korea, who was enjoying her VIPKID life. VIPKID is Chinese online education firm that offers a 1-1 online American English experience to Chinese students ages 5-12. I was planning to quit my then teaching job so it seemed like perfect timing that I found an flexible online teaching job like VIPKID!
The application process was very long and for me quite repetitive since I had been teaching English in Korea for 3 years and been through a lot of similar training and workshops. However, I did get great tips for specifically teaching online and with the VIPKID system.
As warned during training, when you are first hired your booking rates are low and that was pretty much true for me. My first week I did get lucky with being booked but it wasn’t until around month two that things started to pick up.
I LOVE the flexibility of this job, I set my own hours within the given peak time periods for Beijing time. So on Eastern Standard time I usually book my classes from around 6:30am to 8:30am. And yes I have kept a very chill schedule by choice, teaching only two or three 30 minutes classes a day.
They pay $7-$9 depending on your experience and performance during the mock classes during training. So for me, teaching 2-3 classes a day, 6-7 days a week (I’ve been keeping my Sundays free lately) I make anywhere from $200 to $500 a month. The lower end was usually due to me not opening time slots during Peak PEAK hours (earlier in the morning for me) which would’ve resulted in higher booking rates.
The company is definitely legit, they pay direct deposit (USD) to your bank account and for me, the transfer fee is covered. I know some people (myself included) are a little weary about giving out bank information to an online company in China but so far I only have good things to report.
Overall I enjoy working for VIPKID. Every week they send out a spunky newsletter update keeping teachers informed, plus there are tons of incentives, bonuses, competitions and opportunities for making extra cash! And its all optional, you can be as involved (or not) as you’d like.
The company’s drive to consistently improve and innovate itself really impresses me! And I love how they keep a very chill tone in the weekly newsletters.
Like any job there are negatives. For me, the early hours (or late ours depending on where you live) were a big adjustment. Also you are required to open 15 slots of availability a week and sometimes that can be difficult to fit in depending on my schedule.
Other than that, the lesson plans are provided with teacher directions and a cute ppt!
If you are looking for a part-time job that is flexible to make some extra cash each month I highly recommend checking out VIPKID. It is not for everyone, but you also do not need teaching experience to apply.
