How to find the PERFECT Wedding Dress

· 3 Hearfelt Tips for finding THE DRESS ·

Yes, about 70 minutes into my appointment I was FINALLY present and still enough to truly soak it in and acknowledge that I was here; searching for a wedding dress to wear to marry the love of my life, with the two people that gave me life.

Ah the bliss of being newly engaged! As I sift through hundreds of websites, blogs, articles, and pics for advice, reviews, and checklists, I keep trying to tell my self, Tonya enjoy the moment, enjoy the moment.

It’s hard! We live in such an information overload society and our minds are racing a million miles a minute.

February 2oth, I marched into David’s Bridal with my “support team”- my mom, dad, older brother and one of my bridesmaids. It was such fun! I was prepared with pics and fully ready and able to throw out wedding dress terminology (A-line or sheath please!) like a boss!

But when trying on each dress I was in a mental fart cloud LOL. Some dresses I definitely didn’t like and neither did my team but others were beautiful and each in it’s own way!

I left the appointment with my top 2 choices to ponder over. But with so much emotion of having tried on some beautiful gowns, being showered with love as I twirled  like a princess in front of my support team, and trying to picture each dress matching my wedding theme, how the heck am was I supposed to think clearly?!

     1. Pictures!!! LOTS AND LOTS of pictures. And videos may I add. Trying to remember what each dress looked like would have be a nightmare. My support team did an amazing job of snapping away shots of me at every angle. For the days to come I indulged in analyzing every detail of each photo. This was so helpful because dresses that looked great or just okay from my personal viewpoint  turned out to look very different on camera.

Lesson learned, pictures are a lifesaver.

Now, my support team was absolutely wonderful! I definitely recommend bringing a small group of people close to you to give you feedback during your appointment. Everyone’s opinion was honestly great to hear but, if not careful their harmonious opinions can easily overpower the little voice inside you.

2. Hear YOUR voice. It is good to take in the praise and constructive feedback of your team but don’t  let their opinions make your own feel inadequate. During my appointment, there was one dress that was absolutely gorgeous and it fit my body so well. Everyone loved it and it was a unanimous YES. I looked at the dress and my mind told me how beautiful it was- perfect fit, my favorite color, everyone loves it…but I didn’t. My heart was set on a different look. Don’t ignore your voice, the one in your heart NOT your head!

Hearing you heart is going to be tough if you are in a mental fart cloud though, huh? My next tip:

3. Breathe, be still, soak it in. This IS a moment. Take your moment! Don’t let it pass by and realize you were never really in the room. I did that my first appointment. The second appointment, I went with just my parents and to a much smaller boutique. After trying on 5-6 gorgeous Maggie Sottero dresses I was so in awe with every option. My consultant Amber told me, “All dresses are beautiful, choose the one the makes YOU feel beautiful“. Golden words girlfriend! After hearing that I reviewed the pics my dad had been shooting the whole time and narrowed it down to my top two. In front over the mirror I watched myself. I took a conscious, deep breath and turned around to face my parents. “Look! My family is here!” I said aloud and the tears came running down!

Yes, about 70 minutes into my appointment I was FINALLY present and still enough to truly soak it in and acknowledge that I was here; searching for a wedding dress to wear to marry the love of my life, with the two people that gave me life.

And so, I decided that was THE PERFECT DRESS. It was the dress that made be feel incredibly beautiful and it was the dress that I was completely present in.

How did you choose your perfect wedding dress? Any tips for fellow bride-to-be’s (like me!)? I’m all ears!
